Pathanapuram: In a bizarre case, a nine-year-old boy died here on Sunday midnight after consuming alcohol kept at home by his father.

Lijin, son of Laji Thomas of Kunnikkode at Pathanapuram had consumed about 250 ml of foreign-made fruit-flavoured rum.

He was admitted to a private hospital here on Sunday night, but died in the wee hours of the morning. He was a third standard student at Noble Public School. He leaves behind his mother Susan and brother, Libin.

According to Kunnikkode police, the liquor was a gift from an NRO friend to the boy’s father Laji Thomas, a construction worker. Laji, a non-drinker, recently entertained a friend, and kept the balance at home.

“The child consumed the leftover while other family members went out to the church on Sunday evening. By the time they returned, the boy was unconscious in bed with only about 30ml left in the bottle. Unlike other liquor brands, this rum doesn’t give a scorching feeling. The medical results are awaited from the Chemical Analysts Lab”, a senior police official told DC.

“Over consumption of liquor can induce respiratory depression which may lead to death,” said Dr. Y Shiroz. Kunnikkode Police has registered case.
