Woman dragged into cab from busy street, raped

The victim was gang raped on busy roads in Kolkata by five youth, police arrests one accused.

Kolkata: A young woman was gang raped after being forcibly lifted in a taxi from a city street. The horrific crime was committed at Princep Ghat in Kolkata. One of five accused was arrested.

The 22-year-old victim from Kulgachhia in Howrah works at a shopping mall in Jadavpur. At around 9.30 pm on Sunday, she boarded a taxi with her two female colleagues who got down at Park Circus. The victim got down near Hastings-Kidderpore crossing.

She was waiting for a bus when suddenly some youth brandishing knife forced her into a cab, deputy commissioner of police (port) V. Solomon Nesakumar said.

They asked the driver to stop the cab at Princep Ghat, dragging her into a truck and raped her. The brutality on the hapless girl continued till she fell unconscious.

The culprits threw her out and escaped. Regaining consciousness early on Monday she somehow reached Howrah station and called up her family members. The victim was rushed to the Howrah State General Hospital in a critical condition.

Nesakumar who visited her said she complained of the involvement of five persons in the crime. A case on gangrape and abduction has been lodged at at the Watgunge police station.

The victim underwent medical test and also a surgery in the afternoon. West Bengal Women’s Commission chairperson Sunanda Mukherjee who visited her said that her condition was not good. State Congress president Pradip Bhattacharya who also visited the hospital alleged that Kolkata has “become a city of rapes.”

Leader of Opposition Surjya Kanta Mishra said incidents of rapes have become an “endless aff-air.” A group of BJP workers blocked the road near the hospital in protest. CM Mamata Banerjee ordered an immediate arrest of the culprits she announced that her government would bear all expenses of victim’s treatment.
