Many saw TP Chandrasekharan as saviour of their ideologies

The murder of Chandrasekharan redefined the political climate of the State in general and particularly of Malabar.

Kozhikode: The murder of T.P. Chandrasekharan redefined the political climate of the State in general and particularly of Malabar. The incident provided a fillip to CPM infighting with many rebel groups suddenly coming out into the open expressing their solidarity with dissents who were rallying behind the RMP.

Chandrasekharan was the last comrade in the region on whom many rebels in the CPM, fed up with the commercialized communism and watered down ideologies, had fixed their faith. His murder in 2012 made dissent a popular concept.

The CPM was once the lone political entity in Onchiyam, known as the land of martyrs. Even after the exit of TP from the party in 2009, CPM dominance continued in Onchiyam. But after TP, the RMP has emerged as the first party in Onchiyam.

RMP, once a party confined only to Onchiyam, then spread its wings to all parts of the State. Interestingly, it was TP who always discouraged partymen in other regions from forming a unit of the RMP, said K.K.Rema, who is today the party’s main campaigner. “He never wanted the RMP to grow beyond the borders of Onchiyam”, she added.

But TP’s death resulted in a surge of revolt among CPM party workers. The party tasted political defeat on many fronts at Kozhikode, once its citadel. Meanwhile RMP, once restricted to Onchiyam alone , now has committees in 11 districts.
