Kochi: Kochi city police has launched a drive to bust autorickshaws that run without metres. On the first day of the drive, police booked 257 people who plied autorickshaws without metres or without turning on the metres.

Each was charged Rs 1,000, said Mohammed Rafique, the deputy police commissioner. The drive was first launched in Kochi Corporation and Kalamassery, Thrikkakara, Trippunithura, Maradu and Eloor Municipality limits.

“All the sub-inspectors under Kochi city police’s limits are asked to check the metres of autorickshaws that pass through during the vehicle checking. The cops are also asked to direct the people in autorickshaws to only give the metre charge at the end of the drop. The strict drive will continue until all the auto drivers follow the rules and turn on the metres before going for a drop,” the DCP added.

The police also said they had intensified the two-wheeler checking in the city to curb drunken-driving cases. As many as 27 people were booked from Kochi on Sunday for drunken riding and 21 for drunken driving. Among two-wheeler riders, 25 were booked for rash riding and 475 for various other petty cases.
