Girl students trained in self-defence
Chennai: To help girl students safeguard themselves from anti-social elements, the Inner Wheel Club of Madras in association with the All India Boufuuukai Isshinryu Karate Association conducted a self-defence couÂrse for about 200 girl students of classes 6-11 at N.K.T. girls higher secondary school, TriplicÂane, on Saturday.
Students from various schools were trained in batches of 150 to 200 from August 15 last year. Sunder, president of the All India Boufuuukai Isshinryu Karate Association trained students in karate to handle any crisis, besides techniques to develop self-confidence.
The girls were taught how to defend themselves with simple hand and leg movements. By the end of the session, the students performed simple movements with ease and expertise.
Asked about the objective of the training, M. Krishnaveni, principal of the school, said as girls needed to be made aware of the increasing criminal activities against women and learn to defend themselves from anti-social elements in society, the school arranged for the self-defence course to also help increase student's self-confidence.
Students were happy to get trained in the karate techniques. "Private schools charge exorbitant amounts to train students in karate and we received this training free of charge," said Lakshmi, a student.
