Kochi: Aluva police, which is probing into the death of Denny Sunny, 26, a techie, during a dental surgery at Anwar Memorial Hospital at Aluva, will request the district medical officer to hold a special medical board meeting to discuss the case. This is in the backdrop of the post-mortem report that Denny Sunny lost his life after a cotton ball got stuck in his food pipe during the surgery.

The deputy superintendent of Aluva police will send a letter in this regard to the DMO on Saturday. The DMO, the forensic expert of Alappuzha Medical College and other experts would attend the special medical board meeting. Although regular medical board meetings are held every Thursday, the special one could be held before that in case of emergency.

“We have filed a case against the hospital authorities and the doctor, who conducted the surgery, for causing death by negligence. But they will not be arrested now as the state health ministry has directed to conduct a special medical board meeting before arresting doctors in cases of medical negligence,” said B. Harikumar, Aluva Circle Inspector.

The DMO also said they were waiting for the police to file a request to conduct the special medical board. “The police will also have to direct who all should attend the meeting. We would discuss the matter based on the statements of forensic expert and direct the police accordingly,” said Dr Haseena Mohammed, DMO.

Meanwhile, Dr Abraham Varghese, chairman of Ernakulam district task force of Indian Medical Association, said the state ethics committee will discuss the matter after the completion of the police probe.

Denny Sunny was admitted to Anwar Hospital for a minor dental surgery. He reportedly developed complications and was declared brought dead at Medical Trust Hospital, Ernakulam, on Sunday.
