Prison bazaar now comes to heart of Chennai

Senior officials are looking for options to sell the products in commercial places.

Chennai: After launching prison bazaar, which showcased the goods produced by jail inmates in all nine central prisons across the state, the officials now opened a counter in the prison headquarters in CMDA building in Egmore for Pongal.

“We are trying to take the bazaar to more places so that it would attract attention from more people,” said prison chief, additional director general of police, J.K. Tripathy on Friday.

Leather goods, bakery items, currry powders, readymade clothes, mats, footwear, handicraft items and painting by prisoners, coming under the brand name ‘Freedom’, are displayed for sale on the ground floor of the prison headquarters in Egmore.

Senior officials indicated that they are also looking for options to sell the products in commercial places as well. “We may not be able to take it to high-end malls because such places attract huge rent. But we are certainly looking for markets beyond prison complexes and prison offices to sell the products made by the jail inmates,” a senior official added.

Once we make sure that there is a steady supply line, which provide quality product at a lesser price, we can confidently think of exploring the market, the official added.
