Bangalore: While the desperate BrÂuhÂat Bangalore MaÂhaÂnagar Palike (BBMP) resorts to all the tricks in the book to wriggle out of a crippling financial crisis, drawing flak in the process, sources in the civic authority have leaked information to the media on property tax defaulters in city. It is not just the common citizen who has defaulted on payment of property tax, political bigwigs, public sector undertakings and IT majors too have not fared any better.
According to documents available with Deccan Chronicle, three members of a prominent political family including two daughters-in-law, owe BBMP a whopping Rs 39.39 lakh while a Congress MLA from city hasn’t paid tax for three years amounting to Rs 22.99 lakh.
The BBMP has prepared a list of high-value defaulters after serving repeated demand notices to them. The number of defaulters who have to pay over Rs 1 lakh runs into 600 while at least 30 property owners owe over Rs 1 crore to the civic body.
One of the daughters-in-law of the political bigwig owes Rs 15.77 lakh to BBMP for the last three years for a building at Doddanekkundi Industrial Area in Mahadevapura zone. The building owner has not paid property tax for the years 2011-12, 2012-13 and 2013-14.
Another daughter-in-law owes Rs 10.51 lakh for a building owned by her at Kundalahalli Colony. She has defaulted on property tax for 2012-2013 and 2013-2014. The son of the same family owes Rs 13.12 lakh to BBMP for a building under Mahadevapura zone.
A Congress MLA who owns Brigade Metropolis is yet to cough up Rs 22 lakh as property tax. If BBMP makes honest efforts to collect the tax from these defaulters, the civic body can easily tide over the financial crisis, said sources.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle BBMP Deputy Commissioner (Revenue) I.R. Ramakanth said that over three lakh people have defaulted on payment of property tax ranging from Rs 1,000 to Rs 20 crore and above. The BBMP has prepared a list of defaulters and has sent it to the joint commissioners of the zones concerned. The BBMP has eight zones.
