Low humidity increasing nose bleed cases: Doctors
Bangalore: With temperatures dropping and moisture levels in the atmosphere low, ENT specialists across the city are witnessing a rise in cases of nose-bleed, especially among the children and elderly. Doctors blame the low humidity level in the atmosphere as the main reason for this condition.
“Last ten days we have seen numerous cases of people complaining of nose bleed and we are treating at least four to five patients everyday,” said Dr Srinivas D Ramanna, Senior Consultant in ENT, BGS Hospitals. “It is more common in this weather than common-cold,” he added.
Dr Suhel Hassan, Senior Consultant, ENT of Narayana Health City said, “We do see more cases in this weather especially among elderly and children.”
Doctors said the common reason for such a medical condition is dry cold air hitting the nostrils up in front and the mucus crusts, leading to nose bleed and the moisture content or humidity level of the atmosphere has a role in this condition. “If humidity is higher then there will be no nose bleeds due to weather," said Dr Suhel.
People are advised to ensure basic first-aid measure wherein they should pinch their nose with pressure and put ice pack on it.
Following this basic first-aid measure minor nose bleeds tend to subside. If the bleeding is major then ENT specialists follow a procedure called 'nasal cauterisation', which involves sealing off the blood vessel which is oozing.
However, Dr Suhel stresses that, “All nose bleeds may not be because of the weather. There can be other serious medical reasons and it should not be neglected.”
