Biju and team honoured

Indian U-16 (girls) basketball coach Biju D. Themman and his team of girls were honoured on the last day of the fifth JCI All India Basketball Tournament in Ettumanoor. India, which was placed in the elite group — Level 1 — of the third FIBA Asia championship, played along with major forces like China, Korea, Japan, Chinese Taipei and Malaysia in November 2013 and secured fifth place — the best ever performance.

Initially the coach of Mount Carmel School Kottayam, Biju was appointed to head the coaching staff of the Indian U-16 side that participated in the third FIBA Asia championship held in Colombo from November 23 to 30, 2013, and with the help of Coach Abhay Chauhan from Maharashtra, Biju transformed the side and ensured a memorable performance from the side.

Biju D. Themman, who is the secretary of Kottayam District Basketball, is also a coach and mentor to promising talents like Geethu Anna Jose and Poojamol.

Three Malayalis — Vimmy Varkey from Flower HS, Koratty, Mayuka K.T. from Providence GHS, Kozhikode, and Aneeta P.V., a product of Centralised Sports Hostel, Kollam, were also honoured by the JCI at the ceremony organised at the end of the tournament.

Director of Arcadia Groups Thomas handed out mementoes to the players and the coaching staff. Chief guest Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan, Minister for Sports, MP Jose K. Mani, MLA Mons Joseph, Suresh Kurup, NBA-certified coach Jim Corrona, intern­ational player C.B.V. Sunny and ace footballer I.M. Vijayan were few of the big names that made the occasion a memorable one with their presence.
