‘People are bound to be jealous’

...says debutante director Divya Khosla reacting to the reviews of 'Yaariyan'

Divya Khosla cannot stop grinning. Despite being panned by the critics, her directorial debut 'Yaariyaan' has done well at the box office, especially with the youth. Unhinged by the criticism that the film has drawn, Divya says, “Films that are lashed out by the critics are the ones that usually do well at the box office. I am happy that I am not one of those directors that get critical acclaim, but no audiences. My film is being lapped up by the youth. I feel I am better off being a female version of Rohit Shetty who keeps her audiences happier than her critics.”

Among the criticisms that the film has drawn, one that stands out is that Divya has shown an unrealistic college life ruled by lust and hormonal locha (issues). How does she react to that? “What age are we living in? When I was in school itself there was so much gandagi (filth) around me. Imagine how all hell would have broken loose if I had shown that too! Besides, isn’t it normal for girls and boys that age to hunt for their first kiss? After a point, everybody matures and moves on in life. That is what I have tried to show in the film as well,” she says.

She points out that those nitpicking her work are either too regressive or envious. “Now if the country’s largest music company (T-series) finds success in filmmaking too, people are bound to be jealous and badmouth the film. I want to show these people that my debut was no fluke. I will work hard and I am sure that these very people will ultimately accept me as a director,” she signs off on a hopeful note.
