AV College among men and St Martin’s Engineering College among women registered hard-fought victories at the BFI-IMR Reliance inter-college basketball league, organised by the Hyderabad District Basketball Association in Hyderabad.
AV defeated CVSR College of Engineering 48-45 while St Martin’s got the better of St Francis Degree College for Women 23-19.
AV and CVSR began the match by testing waters. After spending most of the first quarter looking for weaknesses in their opponents’ defence, CVSR suddenly amped up their aggression to end the first quarter 13-6 in the lead.
In the second half, AV hit back with nine points, but CVSR still held a 17-15 lead going into the third quarter.
AV College got their act together in the third quarter, scoring 18 points while choking their opponents to take a handsome 33-18 lead into the final quarter.
CVSR were not to be outdone, however. They turned tables, scoring 27 points but the 15 points AV scored were enough to see them through to a nervy victory.
St Martin’s and St Francis were locked in a keen contest over four quarters which eventually ended 23-19 in the favour of St Martin’s.
Sushmita top-scored for the winners with 10 points and received support in the form of Aishwarya, who scored six points, and Manisha, who scored five. For St Francis, Varalaxmi — with eight points — and Ananya (four points) did their best.
