Red terror hits economy
Hyderabad: Maoists have killed 4,054 civilians, police informers and security forces in the last six years in the country. An analysis by the Union home ministry has revealed that the Left wing extremists are focusing on high-end economic targets, though the number of attacks on such establishments has come down in 2013.
There were 169 attacks on economic targets. Of these, 22 major attacks were on NMDC installations, Gramin Sadak Yojana projects, properties of the panchayat, forests and railway departments, and telephone exchanges.
Most of the attacks were in Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand; there were no instances in Andhra Pradesh.
Of the 4,054 killings by Maoists from 2008 to 2013, 121 were in AP. The highest was in Chhattisgarh with 1,298 deaths, followed by Jharkhand with 1,067.

Hyderabad: Last year 394 people were killed by Maoists. This is less than the 415 killed in 2012.
There were 10,366 incidents linked to Maoists in the past six years, with 1,129 occurring in 2013. DGP B. Prasada Rao said, “The influence of Maoists have come down drastically in AP. However, top Maoists are from AP. They may come back any time. However, we are ready for them.”
According to the Union MHA, Left extremists have been unable to conduct training camps freely. In 2013, they could conduct only 28 arms training camps, against 53 in 2012. The number of ‘jan adalats’ has also come down.
An SIB official said Maoist violence has almost ceased in AP and Bengal, and is decreasing in Maharashtra and Bihar. He said Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Odisha are still problematic.
Maoists are focusing on economic targets in remote areas where there is less security. "Security forces are taking precautions after all these years of experience to prevent attacks on them," the official said.
