Rajahmundry: R. Appa Rao, a deputy executive engineer of the irrigation department, was arrested by the urban police here for reportedly assaulting Rajahmundry municipal commissioner V. Rajendra Prasad on Sunday.
According to sources, the DEE went to the residence of Prasad at about 6.40 am on Sunday and entered into an argument with one of the staff there.
On hearing the loud voices, the commissioner came out of his room and enquired about the fracas. The DEE began quarrelling with Prasad as well, and reportedly slapped him.
Municipal staff who had gathered there wanted to take the engineer to task but were dissuaded by the commissioner, who lodged a complaint at the Prakash Nagar police station.
Sub-inspector Kishore visited the spot and took the engineer to the police station.
Circle inspector A. Subba Rao confirmed the arrest of Appa Rao as per the complaint and said that an investigation is on.
