It was a surprising weekend at the box office for the two films that released: Yaariyan and Dedh Ishqiya. Having generated enough of a buzz in the month leading to its release, Yaariyan managed to give tough competition to its well-established rival.
Yaariyan led the way from its opening show. Its hit music seemed to work for the film, and business only improved by the end of the day. The film got very poor reviews, but still managed collections of around Rs 18 crore. This brings the film into the “safe” zone and ensures a successful directorial debut for Divya Khosla Kumar.
Meanwhile, Dedh Ishqiya had a disappointing first day even though it received plenty of critical acclaim. About 40 per cent footfall was anticipated, which surprisingly, didn’t match up to the actual audience attendance. Eventually, the film did manage to garner about Rs 12 crore over the weekend, fairly similar to what Ishqiya had managed four years ago. The weekday collections are what will now decide.
