Barcelona camp kicks off

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad leg of the FCBEscola football coaching camp kick-started at the Sreenidhi Inter-national School at Aziznagar in the outskirts of Hyderabad on Saturday.

The five-day camp, aimed at youngsters in the age group of 8 to 17 years, and organised in association with Spanish giants Barcelona’s satellite academy in New Delhi, will focus on “spreading the ‘Barca Way’ of football, i.e. short passes, ball-control, distribution of the ball and using the space,” according to David Jaray, coordinator of the FCBEscola Delhi NCR, who is in the city to supervise the programme.

“What we are focusing on here is to teach the kids the importance of possession, distribution and using the spaces well. We are making them pass the ball quickly, constantly move around... We would be teaching them technical as well as tactical aspects of the game,” said Jaray.

“We know there are limitations for a five-day camp, but more than anything, we are here to teach them the right approach to the game,” he added.

Recalling his experience during his initial days in India, Jaray said. “When I first came down to the Gurgaon academy, I was perplexed. We had organised some matches... the centre-back was running forward without cover, the left-back was on the right side, the right back was somewhere else.... I was asking myself “What is happening here?”

“But now, after five or six months, they have understood the game. We brought in discipline and organisation to the way they play,” Jaray said.

On his first impressions of the talent available at the city, Jaray said: “We had a few sessions and I could point out a few good youngsters. The school also has really good facilities, so I am sure we will have a very good camp.”
