Traffic snarls hit Perungalathur

Chennai: With the state transport corporation announcing special buses to the southern district for Pongal, traffic policemen in suburban Perungalathur range, off Tambaram, which serves as a transit point, are having a tough time.

Lack of sufficient personnel is cited to be the major reason for poor management of traffic on the Maduravoyal–Tambaram bypass, where traffic at any given time stands still for at least 5 km from Kannadapalayam to Vandalur, sources said.

On Saturday, the transport department allotted around 1,350 buses from Chennai to the southern districts. While traffic personnel have put up barricades and placed signs near bus stops and other places, lack of policemen to regulate the traffic ‘encourages’ drivers and motorists to violate the rules, leading to a traffic bottleneck, said a police official. Every vehicle wants to get ahead of the queue and ends up violating the signals, leading to a snarl, he added.

Traffic also means that commuters have to wait for long hours at the Perungalathur bus stop which is devoid of even street lamps. “We can only regulate traffic. Providing light and other necessities for commuters are the responsibilities of the local body,” a policeman said.
