Desi weddings are recession-free: Ambika Anand

Ambika Anand talks about her journey on her bridal-makeover show and why it gets better with every season.

Indian television’s big fat wedding show, 'Band Baajaa Bride' with designer Sabyasachi is back on NDTV Goodtimes with yet another season. We caught up with the host Ambika Anand, to find out what’s in store for the blushing brides on the latest edition of the show.

Says Ambika, “It’s incredible to be back. As always, this season will also focus on young love. While it is easy to find young love, to reach its final destination of happily-ever-after can be a bit of a task. This season there is an added adventure to the journey.”

We ask her what is it about the show that keeps her going, season after season. “The show’s concept is such that it touches a chord across age groups and social brackets. After all, desi weddings are recession-proof for a reason,” she points out.

Ambika tells us that her role on the show extends much beyond playing a pretty host on the telly. She also doubles up as a confidante to the anxious brides and helps calm those nerves before heading for the D-day makeover planned by the creative team. Recounting one of her unforgettable moments on the show she says, “I’ll never forget the look on the face of one bride when her fiancé popped the question in a hot air balloon. It was priceless.”

But for those brides who may not have the opportunity of being featured on the show, Ambika has a few pointers. “Plan your look at least six months before the wedding. You don’t want to fret close to the big day. Changes in hair, skin and body don’t appear overnight, so start working towards the look well in advance. Zero in on the jewellery, costume, make-up etc a few months prior ot the big so that there’s no last minute stress,” she says.

While we were at it, we tried to get a few style tips for the season too. “In terms of apparel, the combination of white and gold looks stunning. The combination of a long jacket with a lehenga also works for most. Red, coral and fuchsia are perennial favourites with the brides. Coming to jewellery, invest in a combination of diamonds and polkis. A dash of emeralds, pearls or rubies adds another dimension to your collection.”
