Osana, critic of Church, to retire

First critical Church magazine.

Kottayam: Oshana, the monthly which used to critically view the functioning of the Christian church, will be winding up soon and the last edition will be in March.

The monthly, launched in October 1975, by church reformer Joseph Pulikkunnel from Oshana Mount in Edamattam, had generated critical discussions for the last 38 years on various aspects of Christianity.

It had carried articles on several issues like the establishment of a law for the administration of the church, the non-application of the Canon law for the Indian Church and the need for liturgical reforms. The publication is being wound up due to the ill health of its editor and founder, Pulikkunnel.

“I’m 82 and I don't have the health to continue the publication. Hence, there will not be any issue after March”, he said.

He said he had started the monthly to question the unhealthy practices of the church and it was not directed against anyone.

Oshana had also called for a system for the church based on the model of the Wakf Board for Muslims and the Devaswom for Hindus for the administration of its assets. In the liturgical realm, the monthly was against the Chaldean tradition that was imposed on the Indian Church.
