Kannada meet decries divisive demands

Develop Kannada schools on border, says Sammelan.

Mysore: The 80th Akhila Bharatha Kannada Sahitya Sammelan—the three day Kannada literary feast, which ended on Thursday, came up with a clarion call against those demanding the division of the state. The literary meet adopted six resolutions and sought action against former BJP minister Umesh Katti who had demanded that north Karnataka be made a separate state.

A meeting presided over by Kannada Sahitya Parishat president Pundaleeka Haalambi, adopted a resolution condemning the demands for autonomous status for Kodagu and a separate north Karnataka state and rejected the Kasturirangan report on Western Ghats.

The Sammelan passed resolutions for the development of Kannada schools in the border areas of the state and demanded that the rendition of ‘Naada Geethe’- the state anthem—be made mandatory in all schools. The literateurs also urged the Karnataka High Court to conduct its proceedings in Kannada.

Following a proposal to hold the 81st Kannada Sahitya Sammelan in either Kalburgi, Bellary or Haveri, it was decided to organize the meet in Haveri where it has not been held ever since the district was formed in 1996.
