Bailey bridges to ease traffic flow
Hyderabad: In a bid to resolve traffic problems on the busy and congested stretches of roads during the Hyderabad Metro Rail construction, officials have struck upon the idea of laying Bailey bridges at problematic locations. These bridges will ensure smooth flow of traffic when work is underway.
A Bailey bridge is a type of portable, free-fabricated truss bridge, developed by the British during World WarII for military use, which saw extensive use by both British and American military engineering units. Bailey bridges continue to be extensively used in civil engineering and construction sites to provide temporary access.
These bridges will be constructed when the Metro Rail works move to core areas in the city, where encroachments and narrow roads pose a major challenge.
HMR managing director N.V.S. Reddy, accompanied by officials of L&T conducted 5-kilometre padayatra from Public Gardens to Malakpet covering 190 pillars on Thursday to ascertain the problems at ground-level and the measures to be taken to overcome them.
The work has now entered narrow stretches like Koti, Jambagh, Nampally, Chaderghat etc. Encroachments along these stretches pose a major problem. We are contemplating setting up Bailey bridges near the Musi crossing to enable smooth flow of traffic in Koti, Chaderghat and Malakpet areas,” said Reddy.
Officials have also decided to shift the Nizam's era underground drainage system that exists between Public Gardens and Nampally, which is a major hurdle in the Metro Rail work.
