Around 40,000 visitors may attend the annual fete.

Nellore: Here is some good news for bird lovers.

The Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary, considered one of the biggest habitat for some hundreds of pelicans and other birds, will host the annual Flamingo Festival — 2014 on the banks of the Pulicat Lake in Nellore district.

Elaborate arrangements are being made for the annual fete, to be held on January 10 and 11 in Sullurpet division in the district.

Located about 20 km north of the Pulicat lake on the Andhra Pradesh-Tamil Nadu border, the sanctuary is spread in about 459 hectares.

Some hundreds of birds from different countries visit Pulicat lake and Nelapattu Bird Sanctuaries in October every year. The winged visitors prepare nests, lay eggs and return with their young ones to their native habitats in March/April.

The district administration has been organising the traditional fete for the past few years.

Flamingos, Pelicans, Siberian Storks, Open Billed Storks, Night Herons, King Fishers, Painted Storks, Spoon Bills and several other species of birds are to present a colourful gala for tourists at the sanctuary.

District collector N. Srikant has held review meets with the officials and discussed the arrangements for the festival. He asked them to ensure proper facilities in terms of drinking water, transport and other facilities are in place for the tourists who throng Nelapattu village.

He instructed the officials to ensure arrangements for the festival are on a grand scale. The venue is decked up in a grand manner to depict the culture and tradition of Nellore district.

Meanwhile, the women development and child welfare, dairy, medical and health and several other departments are to put up stalls at the exhibition grounds as part of the festival.
The district administration is expecting around 40 thousands visitors to take part in the annual flamingo festival.
