AV are champions

Hyderabad: A.V. College were crowned winners of the Nawab Shujath Ahmed Khan Memorial basketball tournament, organised by the City College Old Boys (CCOB) Basketball Club at the City College in Hyderabad.

In a free-scoring final, AV College got the better of Loyola Academy 103-95. Both the teams started the match on an aggressive note. With little heed paid to the defence, they made frequent — and successful — incursions into the opposition’s half.

The first quarter failed to yield an outright leader and the second quarter witnessed a similarly frenetic display by both sides. After trading blows for most of the second quarter, AV?managed to sneak into a slender 45-43 lead. For the third quarter in a row, both AV and Loyola evenly-matched each other in both offensive and defensive tactics.

It was only in the final passage of play that AV nosed ahead with a few nicely slotted baskets. They tenaciously hung on to that lead and in the dying moments of the match, scored yet another basket to drive the final nail into the championship hopes of the Loyola Academy.

The trio of Sai Krishna, Vijay and Samson did the lion’s share of scoring for the champions. Sai Krishna led the scoring for AV, with 27 points. He received ample support from Vijay, who scored 20 points and Samson, who was responsible for 15. For Loyola Academy, Ganesh, Uday and Chandrahas were the key players.

Ganesh and Uday spurred their team with 24 and 23 points respectively. Chandrahas gave them solid support by scoring 11 points.
