Jayalalithaa raps Centre for hike in non-subsidised LPG price
Chennai: Strongly criticising the hiÂke in the price of non-subsidized LPG cylinders, chiÂef minister J. JayalaliÂthaa on Thursday said the Central government had onÂce again compounded the miseries of the poor by inÂcreasing LPG gas price for the third time in a monÂth. She demanded immeÂdiate rollback of the price hike.
“It is customary to give some good news on New Year’s Day to please the public. The steep hike in price of non-subsidised gas cylinders by Rs 220 has been a very cruel attack on the livelihood of the poor in the country,” the chief minister said in a release.
She pointed out that there was already a demand among public to remove the cap of nine cylinders of subsidized LPG gas.
“The unprecedented price hike amid such a demand will further affect the middle and lower class people,” Jayalalithaa said.
Pointing out that the price of non-subsidised LPG cylinders had increased by 58 per cent since September 2012, the chief minister said that considering the present situation of the public, the Centre should immediately rollback the hike or increase the cap on subsiÂdised gas cylinders to 24.
