SHRC order to publicise facts on jail CCTV cams

SHRC directs the govt to publicise the facts on the CCTV cameras in Kozhikode jail.

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) on Thursday directed the state government to publicise the facts regarding the CCTV cameras in Kozhikode district jail in the wake of the misunderstanding created by the statements of former home minister Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and former Jail DGP Alexander Jacob.

SHRC chairman J.B. Koshy directed the government to publish the report of incumbent Jail DGP T.P. Senkumar, who had probed the matter in detail, through the print and electronic media to remove the misunderstanding among the people.

The direction comes in the wake of the statements of Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan and Alexander Jacob that the CCTV cameras in Kozhikode jail were removed on the directions of SHRC member K.E. Gandgadharan.

The SHRC had initiated a suo motu case against this.

T.P. Senkumar had filed a report stating that they had not been removed from the Kozhikode jail premises.

Senkumar reported that 68 cameras had been installed in Kozhikode district jail by Keltron at a cost of Rs 1.25 crore and not a single camera had been removed.

His report stated that no letters from the SHRC directing the removal of cameras were found in the prisons headquarters here or the Kozhikode district jail.

The CCTV was inaugurated by the then Home Minister on August 10, 2012.

Gangadharan last visited the jail on June 25, 2012.

After the inauguration, no member of the National Human Rights Commission or the SHRC visited the district jail, the DGP had pointed out .
