On road to Tumkur, a jumbo jam
Bangalore: An elephantine crowd gathered near Nelamangala on the Bangalore-Tumkur Road on Thursday, to witness five majestic elephants play in the Hanumanthapura lake almost all day long.
It was a sight unusual enough in these parts — about a dozen kilometers from Nelamangala town —to cause one truck to go over the highway median. Police had a tough time dispersing the crowd.
Elephant experts said even more unusual was the fact that it was an all-tusker gathering.
Large tuskers don't usually group together but prefer to lead their own troops of cow elephants and calves, except when they are raiding crops.
The experts said the five were part of an even larger group of nine tuskers that had been roaming these parts sinceabout a week.
Four of them hadseparated after authorities had tried to drive the herd back into the forest.
