Gas price hike sparks protests

Telugu Desam, YRS Congress and left parties stage dharnas against hike in gas price.

Anantapur: Protests rocked at all parts of the region against hike in price of both subsidised and non-subsidised gas cylinders on Thursday.

Telugu Desam, YRS Congress and left parties staged dharnas and took out processions with the empty gas cylinders at all parts of Anantapur, Kurnool and Kadapa districts demanding rollback the move as it would burden heavily the common people and spoil financial condition.

Telugu Desam politburo member Kaluva Sreenivasulu and Anantapur Assembly segment in-charge Mahalakshmi Sreenivas took out a ‘Sava yatra’ procession of UPA government against anti-people and apathetic decisions towards common people.

Kaluva Sreenivasulu alleged that the Centre was repeatedly hiking the price of LPG cylinders in order to cut the entire subsidy.

“As already people are suffering with cash transfer scheme that majority of people were not able to get subsidy into their accounts even after producing all necessary records such as Unique ID number and savings bank account,” he observed and said people are ready to teach a fitting lesson for the UPA government in the upcoming elections in 2014.

Telugu Desam activists burnt the effigy of UPA government at Clock Tower centre in Anantapur as part of the protest.

YSR Congress activists led by local MLA B. Gurunath Reddy took out a procession with empty cylinders from the party office towards Sapthagiri circle.

Addressing the gathering at Sapthagiri circle, Gurunath Reddy alleged that the Congress-led UPA government has failing to control prices of all commodities including fuel and gas.

The frequent hike of LPG had severe impact on all other related products.

Members of CPM district unit took out a rally with empty LPG cylinders on a push cart at main roads here against the hike in gas cylinders.

District unit secretary M. Obulakonda Reddy alleged that the UPA government had failed in all fronts.

Similarly, protests were witnessed at many parts of Kurnool and Kadapa districts against the hike in LPG prices and demanded rollback of move by oil marketing companies.
