MDMK general secretary Vaiko likely to fight polls with BJP-led NDA

Decision on alliance to be taken at the party’s February 4 general council meeting.

Chennai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Wednesday announced that his party was likely to contest the ensuing Lok Sabha elections in the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance to unseat the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre.

Speaking to reporters here, he said his party was keen to remove the Congress-led government in the Centre from the power for its role in genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka and various corruption charges faced by it.

He said that though he had held preliminary talks with BJP national leadership, the official talks were yet to begin.

Vaiko said that after holding talks with BJP’s TN incharge and national secretary Muralidhar Rao, he met party’s national president Rajnath Singh in New Delhi.

“We are hopeful that people will vote for us to protect Eelam Tamils. Besides, there is a wave in support of BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate and Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi across the country. Modi will be the next PM,” he said.

MDMK leader said that the decision on alliance would be taken at the party’s February 4 general council meeting.

He said that his party also formed separate committee to identify winnable constituencies and to prepare election manifesto.

He also said that his party had been continuing to fight for Sri Lankan Tamils, fishermen issue, river water sharing and prohibition.

When asked about his party’s stand on Sethusamudram project, Vaiko said that the environment issue did not arise when the project was conceived.

“Following the environment concern raised in the Pachori committee’s report, we have decided to review our stand as it affects environment and fishermen livelihood as well,” he explained.
