Crucial vote of confidence today; CM orders replacing plastic night shelters with porta cabins.

New Delhi: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal will face a crucial vote of confidence on Thursday in the Delhi Assembly which he may sail through with the backing of the Congress MLAs, notwithstanding reports of uncertainty surrounding the minority government.

The Delhi Assembly on Wednesday completed the formality of oath taking by the members including the Chief Minister and other ministers with senior Congress member Matin Ahmed functioning as pro-tem Speaker.

Ahead of Thursday’s vote, the Congress made it clear that it will continue its support to the AAP government and there was no question of reviewing the decision.
“We had decided to support the AAP government from outside and we are not reviewing it. We stand by our decision. There is no threat to the government from our side,” Delhi Congress chief Arvinder Singh Lovely said.

The Delhi government on Wednesday announced a series of measures to provide roof to the homeless in biting cold sweeping the city and decided to replace all night shelters being run from plastic tents with porta cabins.

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also directed Sub-Divisional Magistrates (SDMs) to conduct inspections in their respective areas during night hours and ensure night shelters are being run properly. SDMs have also been asked to prepare a list of areas, where night shelters are required, by January 4 morning.

“We have come to know that there are many government-run night shelters which are operating from plastic tents butthey cannot stop cold wind. “Order has been passed to replace them with porta cabins in 3 to 4 days time,” Kejriwal said on Wednesday.

“During night-time inspections by our ministers Manish Sisodia and Rakhi Birla and AAP leader Sanjay Singh, it came to our knowledge that many people are sleeping under flyovers and other such places and not willing to move to night shelters. The government has decided to provide porta cabin- based shelter to them on the spot,” said Kejriwal.

3 power firms in Delhi to face audit

New Delhi: Fulfilling yet another election promise, the Aam Aadmi Party government on Wednesday ordered a CAG audit into the finances of all the power companies operating in the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The decision to audit the private companies came a day after it announced a 50 per cent subsidy to those consumers whose monthly power consumption does not cross 400 units.

Rejecting the contention of the private power distributors, the Delhi government recommended to Lt. Gov. Najeeb Jung that the finances of three private companies be audited as they had failed to explain why such an exercise should not be carried out against them.

The Delhi government had given time to the three companies — BSES Yamuna Power Ltd, BSES Rajdhani Power Ltd and Tata Power Delhi Distribution Ltd — till Wednesday morning to present their views on why there should not be a CAG audit of their companies. Asked what the companies have told the government, Kejriwal said they had given numerous reasons but not one satisfactory reason why the audit should not be done.

He said that auditing would cover the period from the days power distribution was privatised in the national capital.
