Alagiri reels out his achievements
Madurai: With parliamentary polls approaching, Madurai MP and former Union minister M.K.Alagiri emerged out of his cocoon to claim that AIADMK ministers were trying to conceal his ‘achievements’.
Breaking the usual silence or one-word reply to queries he has been maÂintaining after AIADMK formed government in the state, Alagiri told repÂorÂÂters on Wednesday the minÂisters in the ruling paÂrty were engaged in covering all his ‘good woÂrk’ done and listed what he called his achievements while being a minister in the unÂion government.
“When I was minister, I had made several things possible. But AIADMK ministers are trying to conceal them from the public at public meetings and campaigns,” he said and took sole credit for having shifted the central vegetable market from the vicinity of the Meenakshi temple to Mattuthavani on the outskirts of the city.
Describing the opening of 14 free modern toilets as an 'accomplishment’, Alagiri said they have now been converted to pay and use toilets. His role, he said, was instrumental in setting up a granite polishing unit but it has now been dumped.
“I established Anna university in Madurai but it has been closed now,” he said. Taking credit for reopening cooperative textile mill in Melur and Spic in Thoothukudi, opening second government polytechnic institute in MaÂdurai district and CIPET (Central Institute of PlaÂstics and Engineering TeÂchÂnology) college and implementation of second Vaigai water scheme, he accÂused AIADMK government of having nothing to claim as achievement.
The former Union minister for chemicals and fertilisers claimed that it was due to his efforts the Madurai airport has been upgraded in to an international airport.
His MP funds provided to the civic body and the district adÂministration had not been put to use, he alleged.
With his birthday falling on January 30, he said celebrations would be held as usual.
