Buzz over Vasan-Captain meeting
Chennai: Amid overtures from DMK and BJP for an alliance with Vijayakanth-led DMDK for the 2014 Lok Sabha polls, senior Congress leader and Union minister G. K. Vasan on Tuesday evening met the actor turned politician at his Saligramam residence adding to speculation of electoral tie-up.
While though there is no official confirmation about the meeting which lasted nearly 40 minutes, sources from both parties said that it was only a courtesy call where Vasan met Vijayakanth to extend pleasantries on New Year’s eve.
According to DMDK sources, Vasan discussed the possibility of an alliance with Vijayakanth. Following DMK’s decision to break its alliance, the Congress has been left all alone in the state with no parties showing any interest for an alliance with it. Vasan, who enjoys a good rapport with the actor politician, favours a tie-up with the DMDK for the LS polls, sources said.
After distancing itself from the Congress and BJP, DMK president M. Karunanidhi said that he would be happy to have DMDK in his alliance for the ensuing Lok Sabha polls.
DMK also tried to open a channel for negotiation through an emissary Bishop Ezra Sargunam who presided over DMDK’s Christmas celebration at their party headquarters in Koyambedu on December 23.
“I will consider the suggestion made by Ezra Sargunam (about two captains). I will also take into account, most certainly, his advice that I stay away from the BJP,” said Vijayakanth responding to Bishop Sargunam’s advice.
BJP has also been actively wooing the actor’s party to stitch up a grand alliance consisting of PMK and MDMK in the state. A senior DMDK leader said that Vijaykanth would announce any decision on the Lok Sabha polls only after the party’s conference to be held in Villupuram.
