Spotlight on newcomers

In a year that saw several actors make their b'town debuts, only a few managed to leave a lasting impression

If 2012 was the breakout year for the Student of the Year trio Sidharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, then 2013 saw several new faces emerge in Bollywood. While not all of these new actors found the kind of instant stardom the 'SOTY' gang enjoyed, they are snapping up projects and their prospects look promising. Here’s taking a look at the new talent from 2013:

Vaani Kapoor
Model Vaani Kapoor made her acting debut in 'Shuddh Desi Romance' and held her own against co-stars Sushant Singh Rajput and Parineeti Chopra. Vaani says, “I auditioned several times before I got the part in 'Shuddh Desi Romance'. Director Maneesh Sharma would call me for a meeting and suddenly, in the midst of it, ask me to enact a specific scene. When I was selected, it was such a relief.” Vaani has already been roped in by YRF for their South remake of 'Band Baaja Baaraat'. She says, “I am nervous because I loved the original and Anushka Sharma had performed so brilliantly in it.”

Aditya Roy Kapur
Strictly speaking, Aditya Roy Kapur isn’t a newcomer — he’s had small parts in 'Guzaarish', 'Action Replayy' and 'London Dreams'. But 2013 saw Aditya turn leading man in 'Aashiqui 2'. After 'Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani', Adi also bagged 'Fitoor' and 'Dawat-E-Ishq'. Adi says, “Sometimes, one experience can change everything for you; 'Aashiqui 2' has been that for me.”

Sushant Singh Rajput
TV’s chocolate boy found big screen success with 'Kai Po Che' and 'Shuddh Desi Romance'. He has already been snapped up for 'Peekay', 'Paani' and 'Detective Byomkesh Bakshi'. “At one time, I would visit the YRF studios to rehearse as a background dancer. Now I sit in the same office and interact with the media,” says Sushant.
