Caught on camera, tiger remains elusive

Forest department officials to resume rescue operation today.

Bangalore: Forest officials, who were hoping to tranquilise a tiger that had attacked a cowherd in Maddur range of Bandipur Tiger Reserve, had to postpone the operation till Tuesday morning.

The tiger had attacked Javaraiah, who ventured into the forest with his cattle on Friday.

Forest department officials had placed a cage on Saturday to capture the tiger. But the big cat came near the cage, killed the cattle that had been kept as bait and escaped.

Officials had placed eight cameras and the tiger has been captured in most of the cameras indicating that it’s on the prowl in the same area where the attack took place.

The forest department is not planning to translocate the tiger as the officials fear that it could be a mother with some cubs.

To confirm their fears, a tiger cub, aged around 2-3 years, was sighted thrice on Monday when the forest teams were combing the area on elephant backs.

H.C. Kanthara j, Director, Bandipur Tiger Reserve, said that the tiger cub is not the concern now and it was not tranquilised during the operation on Monday.

“From Tuesday, we will take the help of 10 trained elephants to rescue the tiger. We suspect that it could be a tigress which has sustained some injuries. It is unable to hunt and has been attacking humans,” the officer said.
