Baby Mariyam undergoes surgery
Bangalore: Three-year-old Mariyam Kousar, who is struggling for life after alleged medical negligence at Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedics, successfully underwent a tracheotomy surgery (making incision on the neck region) at Malati Manipal Hospital to ease her breathing.
As keeping the child under ventilator for long would pose danger to her life, the incision was made to ease her breathing.
Mariyam had undergone a CT scan on Thursday and the report revealed that the swelling in her brain had spread. Mariyam’s aunt Reshma said, On Monday, Mariyam underwent tracheotomy surgery around noon and it lasted for about one-and-a-half hours.
After the surgery, she was taken back to the intensive care unit. The surgery was conducted after all her vital statistics (heart beat and blood pressure) were brought to normal.
The ENT surgeon who conducted the procedure said that after she is likely to be taken out of the ventilator after three-four days.
“On Monday, her mother, who was inside the ICU, called out her name and she moved her hand,” Reshma said.
Meanwhile, seeking the suspension of erring doctors, Mariyam’s relatives held a peaceful protest in front of Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopedics on Tuesday.
A tense situation prevailed at the hospital where Mariyam has been admitted when a group of four doctors, along with Dr B.G. Tilak, Director, Sanjay Gandhi Institute of Trauma and Orthopaedics, walked in around 6.30 pm on Monday.
Reshma and other relatives saw Dr Tilak and informed Tilak Nagar police station.
