Pocso Act has potential to protect kids from abuse
Hyderabad: Chief Justice Kalyan Jyoti Sengupta of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on Sunday said that the implementation of the new legislation to protect children has been extremely poor in the country.
Pointing out the important roles of different stakeholders in implementing the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012, Justice Sengupta said that police and media play a vital role in the implementation of the Act.
He was addressing the audience at a sensitisation programme on Pocso at the AP Police Academy on Sunday.
Justice Sengupta observed that Pocso has great potential to protect children in the country where many kids are sexually abused.
“In the last three decades, sexual offences on children have climbed steeply. This new act is strong enough to curb them,” he said.
DGP B. Prasada Rao said that anyone who knows that a child is being sexually harassed should inform the police immediately.
“As per the Pocso Act, people who have knowledge about such incidents should report it to the police. If they hesitate, they can be prosecuted for concealing information,” he said.
