Year of the Indie

In theatre, the year saw a boom in short plays

Although the global trend of Indie survival and crowdfunding has been around for years in the music industry, it is slowly trickling into the city, especially on a more individual and independent level.

In theatre, the year saw a boom in short plays. While Dramanon’s short play festival — Skits — has been around, the city also got the inaugural, Short and Sweet theatre festival. One of the biggest short play festivals in the world, the festival, received an excellent response from the city; outstation groups were also part of the festival.

“Audiences love the format. It’s not boring, they get to see a vast variety of talent,” said festival coordinator Anita Mithra, on the interest in the market for the short format.

And the format did wonders for the theatre community in the city that distributes time between a day job and some drama. So, rehearsals moved to living rooms and coffee shops and the need to be part of a bigger theatre company slowly faded away as many looked for fresh ideas.
