Never-seen-before stage techniques

From the first-of-its-kind physical theatre, to the “adults only” exaggerated comedy, productions were a delight this season

From the first-of-its-kind physical theatre, to the “adults only” exaggerated comedy, productions were a delight this season.

The group Cosmic Revelations portrayed natural and man-made disasters that were “gradually leading to the end of Planet Earth” through the medium of light and shadow.

Shadow theatre or shadow play is a form of storytelling that employs the use of a light, a screen and an actor (or even a puppet). “It also ensures that the focus does not shift from the subject,” said Amrapalee Dutta, the assistant director.

Director of the play Suzanne Patel added, “With physical theatre, everything is communicated through the body so there are no language barriers and anyone can watch it.”

Another production that kept people going back was The Open Couple by Anuj Guruwara, Vaishali Bisht and Faraz Khan. Besides the face masks, there was another interactive feature to the play. Talking about the technique that had caught the imagination of audiences, Anuj said, “There are no rules. Everything is improvised on the spot and even the lines don’t stay the same across shows.”
