Intense patrol to check wild jumbos

Forest department improves patrolling on the forest fringes to prevent elephant intruding.

Coimbatore: Forest department has enhanced patrolling on the forest fringes to prevent wild elephants from intruding into the elephant rejuvenation camp at Mettupalayam.

“We have now decided to pass electricity round the clock to prevent wild elephants from entering the camp site,” said a forest department official.

As a precautionary measure, the forest department staff are also announcing at frequent intervals through speakers cautioning mahouts not to touch the solar fences.

The moves come after a wild elephant entered into the camp for forest department elephants at Nellithurai on Friday and created a flutter.

The number of forest personnel at each of the nine watch towers has also been increased to four from two to keep a close watch on the forest peripheries.

Of the 9 towers, 5 are located at the elephants in Thekkampatty and 4 at the camp for forest department elephants in Nellithurai.
