Hyderabad: City police commissioner Anurag Sharma on Saturday said that the total crime rate in the city had dropped this year compared to 2012.
He said there had been a steep decline in cases of rioting, dacoity, robbery, house burglaries and automobile theft.
However, offences like murder for gain, murder, snatching, kidnapping and rape had increased.
“There has been a 68 per cent decrease in riot cases. There was not single serious communal riot in the city this year. Our efforts to keep the peace in Hyderabad has been a success,” he said, while addressing the annual press meet of the city police.
He said despite a severe staff crunch with 31 per cent vacancies, the crime detection rate had incre-ased and added that there would be a special recrui-tment drive to fill up the vacancies with the help of the state government.
Talking about crime detention, Sharma said that many notorious gangs, particularly inter-state gangs, had been busted by the city police this year.
“We busted shutter lifting gangs of Bihar, pseudo police gangs known as “Irani” from Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh and bike-borne money snatching gangs from Fatakpur, West Ben-gal in this year. In order to bust a major gang, we sent our teams to 22 different places in four sta-tes simultaneously and nabbed them,” he said.
The police chief said that there had also been a massive crackdown on drug dealers this year.
“As many as 40 cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substa-nces Act were detected, and we arrested 80 accused including three foreigners,” he said.
As part of the strategy to prevent crime and terror threats, he said that the police had asked private establishments to increase the security and surveillance and had undertaken a massive awareness campaign.
“After the Dilsukhnagar blast, we conducted a massive awareness campaign and asked private establishments to install proper security measures and CCTV cameras. We also conducted anti-sabotage checks to ensure the efficiency of their security,” he said.

Hyderabad: Traffic cops, of both Hyderabad and Cyberabad, have booked as many as 40.36 lakh cases of traffic violation in the city this year. These are worth about Rs 67.83 crore in fine amounts with Hyder-abad registering almost three times the number cases booked in Cyberabad.
According to Hyderabad police, as many as 30.87 lakh cases of traffic violation were booked this year. The figure is slightly higher than that the previous year’s figure.
On the other hand, Cyberabad had about 9.48 lakh cases of traffic violation booked this year, marking a decrease over the previous year. Fine amount slapped was, however, was higher compared to the previous year in Cyberabad at Rs 22.75 crore.
At the same time, violators owe Hyderabad traffic police about Rs 45.08 crores this year. However, much of the money remains un-recovered.
Exactly 1,400 persons were imprisoned for drunken driving in Cyberabad region while about 14,450 cases of drunken driving were booked. In Hyderabad, as many as 1,181 people have been imprisoned while 12,976 cases of drunken driving were booked.
Accidents also came down in Hyderabad with 2,338 road accidents being reported.
