Sonia hints at reconsideration of Maharashtra government decision on Adarsh
Sonia Gandhi hints state would rethink decision to reject judicial commission's report.
New Delhi: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday indicated that the Maharashtra government would reconsider its decision to reject a judicial commission's report on Adarsh housing scam, a day after Rahul Gandhi ticked off the state government over the issue.
Gandhi, whose party has been under constant spotlight over corruption issues, said the media was free to point out "mistakes" of her party's governments but it should look at corruption in states run by other parties as well.. "That has been decided yesterday and I think it is going to be resolved," she said in reply to a question about Adarsh scam report which was rejected by the Maharashtra Cabinet.
The report of the two-member commission headed by retired High Court judge J A Patil has indicted several politicians including three former Chief Ministers for "blatant violations" of statutory provisions in the Adarsh Housing.
Rahul Gandhi on Saturday disapproved of the Maharashtra government's decision to reject the report, saying "Personally, I don't agree with that decision. They (Maharashtra) should reconsider that". His remarks at a press conference at the AICC came in presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan. Sonia Gandhi, while talking at a function here on the occasion of party's foundation day, responded to questions on Adarsh and alleged double speak on corruption.
"I would ask the media to please look at other states led by other parties also, something about corruption..among their (other parties') own friends and particularly among some of their ministers," she said.
"Look at us by all means and point out our mistakes but look at others also," the Congress President said while noting that the UPA government has already ensured passage of the Lokpal bill and is committed to check corruption.
About Saturday's press conference by Rahul Gandhi, she said, "I think the point has been missed of yesterday's meeting. Yesterday's meeting was on Lokayukta and inflation and the discussion during the meeting centred around how the Chief Ministers could act, what legislation and action they can take to fight corruption and inflation."
Her remarks to the media came after she hoisted the party flag at the party headquarters on the foundation Day of Congress, which she described as a "very auspicious day for us". Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and all other senior Congress leaders were present at the function held at the AICC headquarters. Gandhi and Singh distributed sweets among children.
