Oscar Fernandes moots elevated highways
Thiruvananthapuram: Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Oscar Fernandes has said that if the state was finding it difficult to build national highways with more width, the issue can be sorted out by building elevated highways.
Fernandes told reporters here on Friday on the sidelines of the South-India Transport Council meeting that vehicles with less weight could use elevated roads and others could use the normal road. Countries like China have already constructed elevated roads.
The central government was planning such roads for states like Kerala and Goa which have difficulty in getting land for road development, said Fernandes.
He said there are problems in giving special consideration to the state for constructing narrow stretches for national highways as the National Highway Authority has certain criteria for building highways.
