DMK MLA calls rape prostitution
Karaikal: The territorial government has ordered a Crime Branch-CID probe into the alleged abduction and gang rape of a 20-year-old woman on Christmas eve in Karaikal.
A senior police officer said that the case, which was being investigated by the local police, had now been transferred to the CB-CID. The victim, working in a private company in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu, had accompanied her relative to meet the latter’s lover when two gangs abducted the victim and raped her.
The police have arrested 11 persons in connection with the incident while a search has been launched for three others who are at large.
Meanwhile, women's organisations have expressed outrage at the comments made by DMK MLA A.M.H. Nazeem, representing Karaikal South, who questioned the victim’s character. The MLA had told a private news channel that he had information from police officials that it could be a case of prostitution. But a case of rape had been registered.
The All India Women’s Democratic Association has slammed Mr Nazeem for coming out with “insensitive” and “atrocious” statements, casting aspersions on the victim. AIDWA general secretary Sudha Sundararaman said the MLA’s mindset was totally unacceptable.
She said that there ought to be some recourse to legal action against people holding important positions and demanded that the MLA take back his comments.
