CM J. Jayalalithaa allots Rs 20 cr for operation theatres
Chennai: In a major boost to the healthcare delivery, the state government on Friday sanctioned Rs 20 crore to renovate and upgrade the existing operation theatres in all major government hospitals. In Chennai 14 operation theatres located in Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Stanley Medical hospital will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 6 crore.
A release from the secretariat said that the chief minister J. Jayalalithaa had passed orders in this regard and hospitals in Madurai, Thanjavur, Chengalpattu, Tirunelveli and Sankarankoil will get new operation theatres.
Government hospitals located in Paramakudi, Cheyyar, Pollachi, Arakkonam, Mannarkudi, Pennagaram and Aranthangi had also been identified for the project and '50 lakh would be provided to upgrade the surgery units in these wards, the release said.
Most of the operation theatres on Madras Medical College campus are more than five decades old and the infusion of funds will change the dimensions of these critical facilities. The state- of-the-art modular operation theatres to come up will certainly reduce morbidity and mortality in patients, opined director of medical education Dr V. Kanagasabai.
Besides easy maintenance, the modular theatres will have steel railings and flooring with the assurance of low infection rate. The high end operation tables with remote facilities will ensure precision at the time of surgery.
The new theatres to come up in old blocks of cardiology, ortho and neuro departments at the government hospital will also ensure early recovery and it is good news for both the patients and the doctors, professor Kanagasabai pointed out.
