Civic staff call off stir
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Employees Union called off its strike in less than 24 hours after talks between officials and union leaders concluded successfully on Friday.
“Though our main demand of increasing the salary of workers from Rs 6,700 to Rs16,500 is still pending, other major demands like immediate appointment of 50 people on compassionate grounds, issue of provident fund pass-books and Rs 5 lakh accident insurance to workers have been accepted by the officials,” said union president Udhari Gopal.
Health cards will be given to workers on the lines of the one proposed by the state government for Secretariat employees. The GHMC will also write to the government to provide mega city allo-wance to the workers.
Stating that the officials had sought time till January 15 to come up with a clear picture regarding how much salary would be increased, Gopal said that the workers have agreed to wait till then.
GHMC officials, meanwhile, said that whatever demands could be met at the GHMC level had been accepted.
“The salary enhancement is a policy decision to be taken by the government. We will write to the government about the union’s seriousness about the salary hike issue,” said an official.
Meanwhile, a member of another union said there was no need to go on a strike if it had to be called off in less than a day.
