Ambulance driver rapes minor girl, attempts suicide on remorse
Raipur: A 10-year-old girl was allegedly raped by an ambulance driver in Chhattisgarh's Kanker district on December 23, police said on Monday.
However, apparently filled with contrition, the accused, identified as Kiran Kumar, allegedly tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire after the incident, they said.
"A case of rape was registered against Kiran, a driver with Sanjeevani 108 ambulance service, last evening on the complaint of the minor girl in Amabeda police station," said Kanker SP RN Dash.
According to the officer, the incident occurred on the night of December 23 after the victim's mother, a native of Amabeda village, was shifted to Kanker district hospital in the ambulance driven by Kiran.
"Kiran Kumar reportedly took the ill woman to hospital in the ambulance and returned to the patient's house. Kiran, who was in an inebriated condition, asked the 10-year-old girl to accompany him saying her mother is serious and needs her at the hospital," Dash said.
However, Kiran allegedly took the minor girl to an isolated place in a forest area and raped her, the SP said.
He said relatives of the victim failed to inform police about the incident even after she confided in them on December 24.
The incident was reported to police on Friday, following which medical examination of the girl was conducted, which confirmed rape, the officer said.
When a police team was sent to arrest Kiran it came to know that he had allegedly attempted suicide at his residence on Thursday and suffered minor burns.
A case under section 376 (rape) of IPC and Prevention of Children from Sexual Offence Act has been registered against the accused, Dash said, adding that Kiran would be arrested after he gets discharge from hospital.

Thane(Maharashtra): A 50-year-old tribal woman was beaten to death by her son near here as she refused to give him money for buying liquor, police said on Monday.
The accused, Shantaram Kakdya Wagh, a resident of Kakdyachiwadi village under Jahwar taluka, is absconding after committing the crime yesterday afternoon, Assistant Police Inspector K N Avchar said.
The 28-year-old, a habitual drinker, would often ask for money from his mother Sakrubai Wagh to buy booze and harass her if she did not oblige, he said.
Yesterday, she refused to provide him money. Enraged over this, Shantaram kicked her several times and beat her blue and black with a stick, leading to her death instantly, Avchar said.
He fled from the house and a search is on for him, police said, adding a murder case has been registered against Shantaram.

Seoni (MP): A five-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her 13-year-old neighbour in Nagjhir village here, police said on Monday.
The incident took place on Thursday evening when the girl was playing hide-and-seek in the courtyard with the neighbourhood children, Superintendent of Police B P Chandravanshi said.
The boy allegedly hid the victim in his house during the play and sexually assaulted her, police said. The accused has been arrested, they said.
The matter came to light yesterday when the girl complained of severe pain and was admitted to district hospital.
Medical tests confirmed rape following which a case was registered against the boy based on a complaint lodged by her parents, police said.

Bangalore: A 26-year-old woman working in the administrative wing of a multi-national company was attacked by two youths who slashed her throat, when she resisted them from snatching her mobile phone. The incident was reported near railway footbridge at Coles Park on Thursday evening.
The victim has been identified as Neema Farooq, a resident of Coles Park. According to her husband Yasar Farooq, his wife was returning home from work and was just few metres away from her house, when the incident occurred.
As she was getting down the footbridge, two youth pounced on her and slashed her throat twice. They then tried to snatch her phone, but as she resisted, they slashed her hand and escaped with her phone.
“I rushed her to a nearby hospital and a surgery was conducted,” he said.
He also alleged that he had a tough time filing a complaint. “I went to Bharati Nagar, but they said the spot falls under J C Nagar station and asked me to go there. When I went to J C Nagar station, they said the spot falls under Cantonment Railway police station. Even there, the police received my complaint only on my request,” he alleged.
Though there is a rule that the police should respond and take up the case immediately, no matter where the crime has taken place, the police have violated it in this case.
The police has to receive the complaint and transfer it to the police station concerned, if the place doesn't fall under their jurisdiction.
However, Railway Police SP, S N Sidramappa refuted the allegations and said there was no delay in registering the case by Cantonment railway police.

Chennai: An 18-year-old youth and his one-year-old brother from Keelkattalai in Chennai were killed when the car in which they were travelling hit a stationary lorry in Tiruttani in neighbouring Tiruvallur while returning from Tirupati temple on Thursday night along with the family. The deceased were identified as Vignesh and Nanda Kumar.
Police said that six members of the family of Balaji, a grocery shop owner, were returning after visiting Tirupati when the car met with the accident at around 1 am on Friday.
Police said that Balaji and his wife Nagamani had adopted Vignesh since the couple did not have a child for many years after the marriage.
After the birth of Nanda Kumar, the couple had taken a vow to go to the Tirupati temple. Tragically, the couple have lost both their children in the gruesome accident while returning home after completing their vow.
The lorry driver had parked near the Kasinathapuram junction on the highway and Balaji was driving the car.
“The car was moving at good speed and Balaji failed to notice the lorry parked on the side of the road. Since it was a high-speed collision, the car was badly damaged and the passengers suffered severe injuries,” police said. Other motorists who witnessed the crash alerted 108 ambulance service.
Balaji’s one-year-old son Nanda Kumar died on the spot and other five family members were taken to the Tiruttani government hospital. In the hospital, Balaji’s adopted son Vignesh, a first year college student, succumbed to his injuries.
The injured persons include Balaji, Nagamani and Balaji’s parents Ramachari and Mano Ranjitham.
All four family members were shifted to a private hospital in Porur and are undergoing treatment.

Hyderabad: Five persons, including four women, died on Friday when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a slow-moving truck on the Outer Ring Road near Tukkuguda. Four others were injured in the mishap and were shifted to a city hospital.
All the nine were from Gondia in Maharashtra. The accident occurred at about 6 am on Friday.
Police said nine people were travelling in the vehicle which rammed into the truck from the rear.

“It was not that the truck was parked illegally on the road. We believe the truck was moving at a slow pace,” Avinash Mohanty, deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Cyberabad, said.
He further added that weather is not likely to have played a role in the accident.
“I don’t think at 6 in the morning, the visibility would have been so bad that the car could not see the truck in the front. But we are investigating,” Mohanty said.
A police official said that they suspect the driver had dozed off behind the wheels.
This is the second major accident on the ORR in the last three days. On Wednesday, a sand-laden truck rammed into another one carrying sugarcane from behind. The driver of the sand-laden truck was killed.

Hyderabad: A lot of blood has been spilled on the Outer Ring Road since winter set in this year.
Nearly 46 accidents have occurred in the last month in the Shamshabad-ORR region, wherein 21 lives have been lost, including the five persons killed on Friday.
This year has seen more deaths on the ORR compared to the past couple of years. At the same time, other national highways too have claimed several lives.
On the Vijayawada highway alone, 99 people have been killed this year in accidents.
Most highways passing through the city have seen an increased number of accidents this year.
In fact, the highways (national and state) and the ORR saw the most deaths while internal roads of Cyberabad witnessed a decrease in number of accidents.
There have been 1,096 road accident related deaths in Cyberabad this year.
Avinash Mohanty, DCP (traffic), said, “The number of accidents has dropped in the internal roads of Cyberabad, but it is another story on the highways, specifically the Vijayawada and Sagar highways.”

Chennai: Chennai city has so far witnessed as many as 181 murders in city till Friday this year, when compared to 160 killings in 2012.
However the number of murders for gain has come down from 17 to 12 this year. Chain snatching incidents were also brought down by police from 620 reported in 2012 to 520 this year.
Senior police officials, acknowledge that there was an increase in murder, pointed out that most murders were a result of extramarital affairs and family problems all over the city.

Chennai: Neighbours found a 51-year-old woman murdered in Subrayan Nagar in Pammal on Friday.
The police suspect that an AC mechanic in the locality could have killed Rama, a widow, to rob her of gold kept in the house.
The Sankar Nagar police said that the murderer first hit her head against the wall, then slashed her neck.
Local residents identified him as the AC mechanic.
Rama’s younger daughter Swathi, a software professional, lives with her, the older one lives abroad.

Bangalore: A 67-year-old man was robbed of Rs 4.36 lakh in cash by a gang of four unidentified bike-borne men on Cunningham road on Thursday night.
Muneer, a native of Bellary, who used to supply cattle for slaughter, is the victim. Police said that Muneer had come to the city two days back and on Thursday night gone to Russell Market to collect money from the butchers. His auto was waylaid by four unidentified men on two bikes.
“They injured him with a sharp object and made off with the bag of money,” said police.

Bangalore: Upset over friends teasing him, a 14-year-old boy climbed an electric pole and threatened to end his life by holding a live wire.
Bescom officials had to disconnect power for police to bring the boy down.
The incident took place at Celebrity Layout in Electronic City on Friday afternoon. The boy, Durgaprasad alias Ramesh, created panic by climbing the pole.
“Around 3.30 pm, he climbed the electric pole and hundreds of people gathered there. He was shouting and threatening to commit suicide by catching a live wire. We immediately informed Bescom officials, who cut the power. Then we climbed up using a ladder and brought him down. The boy is mentally unstable,” the police said.
“The boy used to be alone at home as both his parents go out for work. His father had got him a second hand mobile phone. Ramesh showed it to some of his friends, who teased him that it was a stolen one. Upset over this, the boy had climbed the electric pole,” the police added.

Chennai: A 38-year-old lawyer from Saligramam was arrested by state CB(CID) personnel for allegedly staging an impersonation drama. He used an unidentified woman to pose as the owner of a property at the Kodambakkam sub registration office to grab land worth Rs 3 crore belonging to a sixty five year old woman who had gone missing in 2010.
The CB(CID) team arrested E. Saravanan, who allegedly produced an unknown woman to be Lalitha Yogeswari, a childless woman and wife of the late dance master Natanamani Balu of Choolaimedu. Before she went missing, Saravanan used to stay as a tenant in her house.
While the CB(CID) has been investigating the case of missing Lalitha, her brother lodged a complaint in November this year with police, saying that her property had been registered in the name of lawyer Saravanan.
During the probe, police found that Saravanan had produced a different woman at the sub registrar’s office as Lalitha to sign the sale deed. They also arrested two men, J. Suresh Jagadeesan and N. R.. Kalairajan who identified the woman as Lalitha at the SRO at the time of registering the property in the name of the lawyer.
The CB(CID) suspects that Saravanan could be behind the disappearance of Lalitha. “The lawyer was taken into police custody for three days from Friday to enquire about his possible role in the missing case,” said M. Prabaharan, DSP, CB(CID) on Friday. Police are also on the lookout for the woman who posed as Lalitha at the SRO.
