Much ado about unknown things
Not getting into technical details, I feel the stereotypical hyper reactions of the Indian government, media and celebs, with regard to Devyani’s humiliation is just another example of how most of us in India do not listen to even what we ourselves are saying. We just scream out aloud without having an iota of understanding of what we are actually shouting about.
I still am not sure whether the anger that has erupted like a volcano in righteous Indians is actually about her arrest or about the so-called strip/cavity seaÂrÂch. I have yet to find a comprehensive and technical understanding from an InÂdian perspective of why they think the US behaved in an autocratic and barbaric way, if at all; it’s there somewhÂere… it must be buried under the tonnes of emotional and irrational outbursts
On the contrary, the US attorney general’s official statement clearly, point by point, explains the technical, legal and moral aspects of the case so comprehensively that we will not even have a question to ask once we go through it.
But no one here seems to even bother to do that, as we are all too busy issuing empty threats. With a great deal of concern I really wonder if we will ever grow up to be adults and address such issues with rationality instead of getting melodramatically hyper. I am also sure, after all this, if the US doesn’t relent, all the reacting agents here will forget this issue in a jiffy the moment another scandal breaks out.
It makes me laugh when we comment on the standard procedures of their custodies; does anyone even know what conditions exist in the Indian lockups and jails? The so-called strip/cavity searches will pale in comparison to what humiliation undertrials are subjected to in our jails. All said and done, after all these allegations, of what kind of a megalomaniacal, bullying and demeaning country the US is, the length of the lines of Indians lining up outside the US embassy desperately seeking visas will be ever increasing. That itself is the ultimate testimony of our hyÂpÂoÂcÂrÂisy. Anyway, what can we really expect… especially since we’re ‘made’ in India.
