HC makes it mandatory for the boy to deposit Rs 50,000 in the name of the girl in UP.

Lucknow: Love in Uttar Pradesh now comes with a price tag of Rs 50,000. After a recent High Court ruling, it has now been made mandatory for the boy to deposit the amount in the name of the girl if the couple wish to marry without the consent of their respective families.

The court placed this cash guarantee clause in love marriages in an order passed on a petition filed by one Rekha from Sant Kabir Nagar, who had been dumped by her groom after marriage.

Following the court order, UP DGP Devraj Nagar has issued directives to all police stations to ensure implementation of the order.

An official admitted the police machinery is faced with abduction cases against consenting adults who elope to get married.

Legal system ‘unfair’ to lovers

The country’s legal system is “unfair” to youngsters in love, a Delhi court has observed while acquitting a youth of charges of kidnapping and forcing a girl, who was four months away from attaining majority, to marry him, after she admitted to have acted of her own accord.

ASJ Kamini Lau expressed anguish that a man is punished for falling in love with a girl who was on the the verge of attaining majority, is kept in jail with hardened criminals and accused of crimes like rape, man-slaughter and dacoity.

“This happens only because the existing statutory laws of our country do not providing for any 'Window Period' in case of elopement of youngsters (where the girl is a minor) where there is a non exploitative situation,” the court said while adding exceptions and allowances have to be made while considering the age of consent keeping in view changing social sensibilities and other factors.The court acquitted a Sagarpur resident of the charges of kidnapping a girl who was 17 years and eight months old and compelling her to marry him.
