PMK’s council meet on January 2 to discuss BJP ties
Chennai: PMK has convened its general council meeting on January 2 in the city to discuss the ensuing Lok Sabha polls amid rumours of it joining BJP alliance in the state.
“The council will discuss the party’s agenda for 2014 and to draft action plan for the Lok Sabha polls,” said party president G.K. Mani in a statement here. PMK founder Dr S. Ramadoss and his son and youth wing president Dr Anbumani will preside over the crucial council meeting at Kamarajar Arangam.
Though PMK has floated a Social Democratic Front consisting of caste parties for the Lok Sabha elections, there were rumours that the party could go for an alliance with its erstwhile ally BJP.
BJP aspires to form an alliance comprising DMDK, PMK and MDMK. PMK and MDMK have shown inclination to join this poll alliance while DMDK remains non-committal.
A senior leader of PMK said his party was not averse to the idea of aligning with the BJP in the ensuing LS polls. “We have decided against aligning with DMK and AIADMK.
There is no possibility of aligning with Congress following its role in the Eelam Tamil issue and corruption charges faced by it. Hence we need a change of the government at the national level. It is possible only by a BJP led front,” he said, pointing to the victory it scored in the recent assembly elections.
Another senior PMK leader said his party was also conscious of the fact that if they go alone and split the votes, it would be indirectly helping the ruling AIADMK. “There is a wave in favour of Narendra Modi, BJP’s prime ministerial candidate. So the alliance will be mutually beneficial,” he said.
