Police plays down gang war in Kochi

Citizens feel unsafe, fear return of goon raj.

Kochi: With the recent outbreak of gang rivalry in Kochi, it has become dangerous to live in the city. Saturday’s incident which saw two suspected goons of Maradu Aneesh’s gang allegedly throwing bombs at the residence of the aides of Bhai Nazeer showed that the lives of Kochiites has become vulnerable.

However the Kochi city police is yet to take the case seriously. Instead they have been playing it down as no one was injured in the incident. “It was just a cracker. It cannot be referred to as a bomb,” said a top police official.

It is unfortunate that the Kochi city police is playing down the incident since many could have been injured if the bomb was thrown in the direction of people. The attempt of one gang to attack the other by throwing bombs may also lead to a revenge attack, which is also being played down by the police.

Imthiaz Khan, an aide of Bhai Nazeer was killed by Maradu Aneesh in the wee hours of December 27 last year. This suggests that Nazeer’s gang may retaliate on his death anniversary, considering the fact the goons are highly emotional about the deaths of their aides.

If it was Thammanam Shaji’s gang that was leading the streets during 2000, Maradu Aneesh and Bhai Nazeer have taken that role now. People complain that it is the cavalier attitude of the police towards goons that has resulted in the return of gang wars in the past few months. And it will be the public who will pay the price if the city police fails to take any serious steps to put the culprits behind bars.
