It’s been worth the wait: Saiyami Kher

Shabhana Azmi’s niece speaks about her debut Telugu film 'Rey', directed by Y.V.S. Choudhary.

Saiyami Kher is eagerly awaiting the release of her debut Telugu film 'Rey'. In the city to promote her film, the newcomer tells us how she got her first break. “I was modelling for two and a half years and I had also done the Kingfisher 2010 calendar. That’s when director Y.V.S. Choudhary garu saw my pictures and asked me to come for an audition,” says the state-level badminton player.

Saiyami comes from an impressive background. Her aunts Shabana Azmi and Tanvi Azmi, as well as her grandmother Usha Kiran have acted in films, while her father Adwait Kher is in advertising. “They all supported me when I chose to do this film,” she shares.

Speaking about her role in Rey, she says, “I play a simple college girl named Amrutha.” Y.V.S. Chowdhary is known for portraying his actresses in a glamorous way in all his films. Saiyami agrees, “I look glamorous in the songs and am waiting for the song Golimar, which is a remix of Chiranjeevi garu’s song.”

Her co-star in Rey is none other than celebrity son Sai Dharam Tej. “When I auditioned for the film, I didn’t know who he was. But when we started shooting, my director told me about him and I found out that he comes from a big film family,” Saiyami admits.

“I was apprehensive at first, as I thought he may have an attitude. But he is a down-to-earth, kind and humble person. He even helped me with my language and diction,” she says.

Has she met anyone else from the famous ‘Mega’ family in Tollywood? “I met Bunny as he visited the sets one day while we were shooting. Y.V.S. garu asked him to direct a small scene. It was fun and Bunny is a very sweet person,” she says.

It’s been quite a long wait for Saiyami, since Rey has taken nearly two years to complete. “Yes, it’s a very long time,” she admits, before adding, “But it was worth the wait. Today, I saw the trailers and I’m so happy that all our hard work has paid off.”

Saiyami is also hoping that she’s here to stay. “I want to do more Telugu films. I like the atmosphere here and I’m learning the language,” she says.
